In Praise of Hedonism

hedonism by *fee-absinthe www.deviantart.com

Ahhh,  I know, I know.  Horoscope readings should not be taken too seriously, especially the ones that tell you to get off your butt and get some work done!  I must try to keep that in mind.  But how can anyone not like this one or fail to take it to heart -

In the mood to indulge? Typically, you don’t need any encouragement in that department. So given just a bit of a nudge, like the heavenly one you’ll receive now — well, ‘hedonistic’ is an understatement.

  • Compatibility: Scorpio
  • Mood: Happy
  • Lucky Color: Teal

I don’t think I know any Scorpios – but today, who cares.  It’s all about me.  (How this is different from any other day of the week I fail to understand, really.)  Being happy is good and more or less the norm for me most days; teal is kind of pukey, but I’m willing to give it a chance.

Every one of us is a hedonist at heart, although personal definitions of what’s opulent and luxurious can be all over the map.

hedonist:  1822, in reference to the Cyrenaic school of philosophy that deals with the ethics of pleasure, from Greek hedonikos “pleasurable,” from hedone “pleasure,” related to hedys “sweet”.   A hedonist is properly the follower of any ethical system in which the highest good is some sort of pleasure. The Epicurian identifies this with the practice of virtue.

I’m reading “The Virgin Cure” by Ami McKay on my kindle right now.  It’s set in the late 1800′s and is about a young girl living a hand-to-mouth fight for survival in the slums of New York.  Going from that existence into a brothel where she has food to eat and clothes to wear and a bed to sleep in – her life should be so very much better for these changes, wouldn’t you think?

Every sensual pleasure can be defined in a myriad of ways – in the end it’s just a matter of perspective.  It’s how we perceive outside stimuli and react to them that decides whether they are the cause of pleasure or of pain, or some weird combination of the two.

Sight, hearing, taste, smell, touch – let’s see what my hedonistic little self has chosen to embrace today.

It’s a bright and sunny winter morning, and there is snow on the ground!  It fell last night while we were sleeping and looking at the sparkling white world out there makes me happy.  That’s mostly because I do not have to go out anywhere today and slog through it.  And I’m seeing it through my mahogany colored blinds from my warm watermelon red and elephant grass yellow living room where candles flicker on the hearth by the dark red brick.  Trust me, it looks slightly better than it sounds.

I can hear W shovelling the driveway.  Otherwise the world is still and silent.  How I love this calm serenity and sweet lack of noise.  Crap, he just started up the snow blower.

The taste of steaming hot coffee, and an icy cold fruit smoothie; knowing that next there’ll be all that green crunchy stuff in a salad topped with red Catalina and some kind of protein rich main course to anticipate for later – those things are high up there on my list of creature comforts.  I’m so glad I don’t have unreasonable chocolate and sugar cravings, because if I did I know I would indulge them shamelessly.

The smell of my shampoo and conditioner and soap and deodorant and the coffee brewing and clean sheets and scented candles have all been part of my aromatic morning.

Add to all this the wonderful feeling of hot water in the shower, a brisk rub with a thick towel, silky lotion for my dry skin, fuzzy socks on my cold feet and the delicious feeling of the keyboard yeilding and compliant under my fingertips.

If all this is hedonism, please sign me up.  I’ll strive to make every day feel just like this one, treating myself to life’s simple pleasures.

Dae Ye Ken?

Taurus horoscope for January 9th:

If you’ve got shopping to do, this is definitely the time to do it. You’ll be less than impulsive, and able to dicker successfully with even the most skillful of salespersons. Dress appropriately.

  • Compatibility: Virgo
  • Mood: Lucky
  • Lucky Color: Orchid
  • Lucky Number: 88
  • Lucky Time of Day: 8 p.m.

So, does anyone know how to dress appropriately for dickering?  Maybe in something “orchid” colored?  Whatever that might be, although I’m thinking possibly purple-y.

The Daily Extra suggests a money saving green tip for today – buy used products when possible.  Sources include garage sales, thrift stores, eBay, Craiglist, consignment shops and used furnitures sthores.  All dickering places, to be sure.  Too bad I can’t think of anything I need to shop for at the moment.  Maybe another book shelf, since I’ve decided to include all the photo albums in the same place as the books.  And yesterday I discovered a bunch more books in our storage room.  This project appears to be never ending.

And just to stay faithful to my 365 project, here’s a picture of one of our new bathroom fawcetts.  If you squint and use your imagination, it’s kind of bull shaped.  Taurean taps. I’d love to go on imparting more wisdom and brilliance but that might make me late for work.  I’m sure there’ll be things to dicker over there until my lucky time of 8 p.m. which is when I close up shop and come home.  Lucky me.
