Growing Your Soul

Here we are, trapped in the amber of the moment.  There is no why.

I tell you, we are here on Earth to fart around, don’t let anyone tell you any different.

If you can do a half-assed job of anything, you are a one-eyed man in the kingdom of the blind.

There’s my inspirational quotes for the day.  And the best signature I’ve ever seen.  I got the first part of this from someone’s facebook page after that person shared it from someone elses, so I’m not sure of it’s exact origin, except of course for its being a Kurt Vonnegut quote.  The last three KV quotes are ones I added for even more personal enlightenment.   I haven’t read anything Vonnegut has written for a long time.  Not since “Cat’s Cradle”, “Welcome to the Monkey House” and “Slaughterhouse Five”.  “Fates Worse Than Death” looks interesting (you can read more about it on Amazon) and I think I’ll download that one to my kindle.  A good strong dose of Kurt Vonnegut is something everyone should experience at least once (or better yet, twice) in their lives.

I’ve been purchasing a few of  the 99 cent Kindle Daily Deal books, and discovering that some of them are worth only about 95 cents tops.  But I rarely give anyone a bad review, because I think it ultimately reflects badly on me – it was a topic that didn’t hold my interest, or I wasn’t in the proper mood to appreciate where the author was coming from, or it had concepts so foreign to my own life that I just didn’t get it.  So imagine my delight to come across this KV quote –

Any reviewer who expresses rage and loathing for a novel is preposterous.  He or she is like a person who has put on full armour and attacked a hot fudge sundae.

I feel perfectly justified now in keeping my worst criticisms to myself.  I’ve read highly recommended books and watched highly rated movies that left me cold.  Then again I’ve also totally loved movies that got really bad reviews on Netflix, so there’s no accounting for taste.  And here’s a true confession – I’ve read only the first book in the Twilight series and I’ve seen NONE of the movies.  After I read the first book I asked someone to tell me what happened right up to the end, and I was quite satisfied with that condensed version of things. So there’s one good example of something that is wildly popular and I don’t understand the fascination.

It would be a very dull world if we didn’t have different opinions or appreciate beauty in vastly different things.  All this makes me want to sit down and write some really pathetic poetry!  I know for a fact that I’m good at doing that and often find the process more rewarding than the results.  My soul will grow – and that’s all that really matters.

  1. I agree that we all see the world through different eyes. Using our gifts is the important thing, whether or not the world views the results well. It is the creating that is good for the soul.
