Ambiguity

men's closet

The carpenter who came to remodel our bedroom closet discovered you snoozing naked on our bed.

He’s refusing to return.

I know my note said to remove all your clothes, but honey, seriously.  That wasn’t what I meant.

I’m the hundred dollar textbook you caressed with pink and yellow highlighters.  Café smudges and coffee spills grace my tree-murdered pages.  How long before there’s no one left alive who remembers my name?

Trifecta Week 101 Challenge:  we’re asking for 33 of your own words inspired by the above picture.

On the Run

quaint bar

Wanting to escape the cold night air and warm up somewhere – anywhere will do –  he gives the heavy oak door a hard shove with his shoulder and steps inside.  Restaurant?  Bar?  What is this place?  It doesn’t matter.  Quaint old tavern in the middle of a bad dream.  He weaves his way through the crowd to the back and heaving a shuddering sigh sits down on the last stool.  He rests his damp forehead in his cold hands.  Just for a minute he closes his eyes.

He has to think, decide what to do next, find somewhere to spend the night.  He is bone tired, broken.  Maybe this is what defeat feels like. That nowhere place that cradles you before you fall asleep, the final giving up.

Her warm voice breaks through with a soft question and he shakes his head.  Nope, I’m not okay.  But if you’ve got coffee, or some hot soup…. His voice trails off when he looks at her face.  God, not pity.  Anything but that.

Then she smiles, gives her shoulders the faintest of shrugs and he can almost feel her compassion.  It’s that powerful.  Strong enough to warm him from the inside out.  He hardly has time to process these thoughts before he’s cupping his hands around a big white bowl, inhaling the aroma of sweet thick chowder, scalding his tongue with his first impatient spoonful.  Starving.  For food, for tenderness, for the end.

A blast of cold air hits him in the gut when two men he recognizes all too well push through the door, obviously looking for somebody.  For him.  How in hell did their search lead them here?

She steps around the counter blocking him from their view, puts her hand over his and tells him to come with her.  There’s a room in back where he can hide.  Nothing about this makes sense, but he blindly follows her anyway.  His life makes no sense.  Still he doesn’t want to lose it.  Not yet.

Hippie Speak

Dad, I’m leaving town for a few days, remember?  We talked about this last night.  You going to be okay here on your own while I’m gone?

Yeah, that’s copasetic.  Far out.  Righteous, babe.

So you’re telling me you understand what I’m saying to you? Or we can go over it again if you want.

Hey, don’t freak out. Chill. I ain’t trippin’. Lay it on me.

It’s just a short business trip. I’ll be back on Friday.  I’ve left the name of the hotel where I’m staying and the phone number if you need to reach me. It’s all here on the counter.

Wicked. I’m cool. I dig it.  I can hang loose.  Nice threads, by the way.  You are all decked out.

Thanks – I didn’t think you’d notice. It’s a little more colour than I’m used to. You’re serious, I look good?

You look bitchin’.  Right on!  Boss!  Groovy! Clean outa sight!

Good Gawd.  Too much weed Dad.  You are so stuck in the sixties.  It’s just weird.

I’m a fascinating dude, a real gone cat.  I cannot lie.  Blitzed or not I am always hep.

Okay, whatever.  I’ve got a plane to catch.  There’s lots of food in the fridge. Make sure you eat.  Millie next door says she can pick up anything you need, you just have to ask. She’ll be by to check on you.  Please don’t burn the house down while I’m gone.

No sweat. Don’t get hacked.  You can split.  Go ape.  Have a blast.

Right. The cab is here, I’m off. Catch you on the flip side, daddy-o.

Oh man, hey, that’s my girl!  Later baby.  Peace, out.

peace out

Trifecta Challenge Week 109: It was interesting to look at all the new words that officially came into
existence during the last year. Unfortunately, they are so new they haven’t had
chance to get a third definition yet. But after delving into a list of new words
and meanings which have come into English over the last fifty years, you can see
many old words have changed their meaning. There are some crackers. And one of
them is your Trifecta 109 prompt.  Enjoy!

My Three Word New Years Resolution

tell your story

Trifextra Week Ninety Nine:

Michael Hess inspired us with his three word New Year’s resolution – just be nice.  We’re asking
for your own resolutions in just three words.

I made a long list for inspiration.  Carry a pen, stop and look, have some fun, ride the waves, laugh like hell, find what matters, write it down, tell your story.  I aspire to do all these things, plus use more glitter and shoot the moon.  Why?  Because ultimately I want to do this:

Leave Something Behind

It finally came down to those three words when I realized it’s why we do it all and why we write – so that some small part of us will live on after we’re gone.  If you can’t make your words earth shatteringly memorable , don’t worry.  Glitter is almost impossible to get rid of and will keep people thinking about you for a very long time.

Happy New Year to everyone at Trifecta and everyone who participates in these delightful challenges.  Keep making memories.

Trifextra Week 98:

Charles Dickens, in A Christmas Carol, wrote “There is nothing in the
world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good humour
.”  We are giving you exactly 33 words to make us laugh out loud and spread some festive cheer.

Subnivean Meltdown

subnivean zone entrance

Welcome to our subnivean world

Where the sun will never shine.

I sense your uneasiness with the gloom.

You wonder why we choose to exist

In this silent and cheerless place.

I will play the morosoph to answer;

The decision was ultroneous,

Simply because we had no other choice.

And now there is nowhere else to go.

Perhaps this is also true for you.

See how our refuge keeps us sheltered and warm?

Here we are safe from the rasorial creatures,

Far from the predators in their bosky copse

And the bitter cold above us.

Here there is little to fear.

Stay with us and let your anger soften,

Your fighting spirit and your bitterness melt.

Bear us no ill will and you will be protected.

You will be one with us.

We will play cockal in the darkness

To while away the winter hours,

Nights and days passing in a fog of promnesia.

I think you will get used to it, this somnolent existence.

If not, the alternative is to leave.

Perhaps to die.

Ah, I see you have made up your mind.

A wise decision.

Welcome to our subnivean world.

No excuses for missing a Trifecta Challenge since now there will be just one a week instead of two. This weeks word is the 3rd definition of “melt” – to make tender or gentle, soften.

I have never written a blog post with footnotes (and I’m not about to start) but I am including some definitions of weird words of the day from Wordnik so that the above will make some small modicum of sense. I love learning new words.  If you don’t need these definitions – wow, you have a very impressive vocabulary. If you do need them, you’re welcome.  Make these words your own and impress your nerdy friends.

subnivean  – Situated or carried on under the snow, an insulated area between packed snow and the ground where small animals take refuge

morosoph –  A philosophical or learned fool, jester This word comes from a Greek phrase meaning ‘foolishly wise.’

promnesia  –  The illusory consciousness that an event, now happening for the first time, has been experienced before.  Also paramnesia, deja vu

ultroneous – Spontaneous; voluntary, from the Latin ‘ultro,’ of one’s own accord.

rasorial  – Given to scratching the ground for food, as poultry;

cockal  – A game played with the anklebones of a sheep in the place of dice.

bosky – Woody; consisting of or covered with bushes; full of thickets.

Poor, miserable, myopic me. My world used to dazzle and brilliantly shine.  Now cloudy grey fog envelopes me.  Horrible, disastrous morning!  Case knocked into the bathroom basin, contacts slithered down the drain.  CRAP.

Why is my life so damned boring?

Yelled Jack, with little forewarning.

His friends didn’t know

But suggested he go

Drink some ale to calm down his roaring.

Since the bartender never stopped pouring,

Jacks head was soon muddled and soaring.

He fell in a bush

And injured his tush.

It was hard to explain in the morning.
