The Second Cup

(From All the Ways Things Are on Facebook)

As much as I love that first cup of freshly brewed coffee on a Sunday morning, the second cup is even better.

While the coffee brewed this morning I suddenly decided to clean out my junk drawer.  I honestly can’t remember what sparked that burst of ambition, but I do know that if this happened more often it wouldn’t have to be such a time-consuming and complicated job.  Its current state seemed to warrant dumping the entire contents on the kitchen table.  Once that’s done there is no turning back.  This doesn’t mean I finished making sense of the mess (because it’s not done yet, 13 hours later) just that it will have to be dealt with eventually if I ever want to use the kitchen table again.

So that first cup of coffee had to compete with junk drawer sorting, a quick shower, hair drying, Facebook checking and e-mail perusing.  Insanity. Coffee should be savoured, not gulped down in amongst random morning tasks. And in case you think it’s amazing that I limit my coffee to two cups, you should see how gigantic my favourite mugs are.  They don’t hold half a pot of coffee, but close enough.

So I sat down in the living room to enjoy the second cup doing absolutely nothing.  Ha.  That’s not exactly true.  Unless playing Candy Crush on my I-pad is a big fat nothing. Which many people would agree it is.

Then I had a great visit with a former co-worker/friend who is in the process of landing another better job and has asked me to one of her references.  Made me realize yet again how much I miss her smiling face and the amazing person she is and always was to work alongside.  But life goes on and everything changes. We got each other caught up on the latest developments.  Two more people are leaving my workplace.  Perhaps it’s something I said.  And I’m wondering if I can stick it out for this last year before retiring next September.

Imagine all the second cups I’ll be able to consume at my leisure when my working days are done.  If all that caffeine doesn’t kill me first.  I would like to at least get all my pens, paper clips, elastic bands and rolls of tape in order before that happens.

Good News for Coffee People

Whoever wrote these brilliant and profound words is my hero:

Drinking coffee can make you mentally alert, increase your concentration, allow you to focus more, speed up your reactions, and alleviate minor aches and pains.

I don’t even care if this is wrong information.  I like it, and I’m going to carry on drinking coffee and give up nothing but the guilt.

Christmas Coffee

This is just one of the reasons why I love coffeepoweredmom (see, it’s not just her name, although I admit that’s exactly what drew me to her blog in the first place).  Anyone who gets powered up on coffee on a regular basis is certainly on my list of likeable, follow-able people.

Her Happy Holidays Photo Challenge is brilliant!  Coffee and Christmas – two of my favourite things.

Whoa – looks like somebody needs coffee to sober up on Christmas morning.

The only complaint I have about this challenge is that my coffee got cold while I was messing around.

Thanks coffeepoweredmom.  I hope lots of people brew themselves a fresh pot of coffee and take the challenge!  This was fun.

5 Things I’m Looking Forward to This Week

Coconuts

Smelling like coconut lime.
Not sure why that made top of the list. Surely to God there’s something more exciting in my life than having picked up a big tube of lotion yesterday while grocery shopping. Don’t worry, something is bound to come to me. The coconut lime won out by THIS much over pink grapefruit. It was a tough decision, and now I’ve resigned myself to living with the results of that choice.

Letting my skin breathe.
Well, the skin that’s not covered in coconut lime, at least. And the skin on my face is soaking up the atmosphere as we speak. No work means no make-up for me, and this is the start of my six weeks away from work. WOOHOOHOO!! Yep, my skin and I are uber thrilled.

Having sit down breakfasts with my husband of 39 years.
Our anniversary was yesterday. Almost 4 decades with the same man! That should be some kind of indication of my resolve when it comes to sticking with choices, no matter how bizarre they may be. We went out for dinner and had an argument about what the weather was like 39 years ago. It was not snowing, it was freezing rain. It’s amazing to me the drastically important things he can’t remember. So now we can have some leisurely breakfasts together and I’ll see how much of our personal history I can alter before he catches on that I’m just making shit up.

Drinking Tassimo coffee numerous times a day.
Whoever invented the Tassimo, if he’s not a millionaire already, he should be. Another one of my dubious impulse buys, but I seriously love that thing. It is SO deliciously lovely to brew one perfect cup of coffee whenever the mood strikes me. Espresso, cappuccino, au lait, crema, breakfast blend, Columbian, suchard hot chocolate….be still my heart. Well, like that’s gonna happen with all that caffeine.

Getting my Christmas Shopping done before December 6th.
Won’t that be amazing! And no, I haven’t started yet, but I have complete confidence in myself. On the 6th I’m flying up to ‘the ranch’ to spend time with my daughter-in-law and four of my grandchildren, all the way to Christmas. She actually asked me to come! How’s that for a hard to believe mother-in-law story. The rest of the family will fly or drive up closer to Christmas, so I have to get the gifts ready for my spouse to bring with him. I also have to train him in the art of caring for a fish, and will say my goodbyes to Phinaeus before I leave, just in case.

Huh – I guess that’s 5 things, so that’s it. Coffee anyone? It’s not like I have to get to sleep and be anywhere important first thing in the morning. Oh yeah, except for the breakfast thing. Smelling like a coconut. It’s going to be a great week.
