Try This at Home

Despite squirting minced onion juice directly into my right eye, I am having a pretty good day.

Recipes to me are mere guidelines, and unless I’m feeling particularly sad and vulnerable and morose and unsure of myself (man, why would anyone try to create something feeling like that?) I like to wing it and see what happens.  This drives recipe following people a little nuts.  But it’s kind of exciting and God knows I don’t live dangerously in any other way whatsoever.

Anyway I have avocados which will not last forever in my fridge and decided this morning to try making avocado ranch dressing, or dip, or a combination of the two.  Does anyone actually measure avocado?  Wouldn’t a normal person just take their chances and  use a whole one?  I don’t like to measure sour cream or mayo either because they get my measuring cups all gross, so I plopped a dollop of each into the bowl with the avocado.  I left out dill because I don’t have any.  For onion salt and garlic powder I figured the real thing minced would be even better.  Except for the part where putting onion chunks through the garlic press temporarily blinded me in one eye, I think that worked out well.  Then I added apple cider vinegar instead of white.  I don’t really know why, but why not, hey?  And finally salt and pepper and dried parsley. Also not measured because things like that should be to taste.

It all got mushed up together with the immersion blender (I used to call this the Braun mixer, but apparently other companies make them too and I like this slightly more sophisticated name which makes me sound like I know what I’m doing when it comes to kitchen utensils).

Dont worry, its highly unlikely this will be turning in to a cooking blog.  It’s a stage I’m going through, that’s all.

Daughter and granddaughter are coming over for W’s famous fish and chips this afternoon.  I will be contributing a salad, OR……avocado tartar sauce maybe.  Doesn’t that sound good??

A Gutsy and Daring Fish Story

With an air of foolhardy spunk, I pick what’s missing in AIOU.  I am tardy and a day past prompt, but still I think this is worth a look.

Al says, “I want to go fishing. How about you, my darling girl?”

“No way”, says Anna. “I’ll pass.

You won’t catch anything at all in this soup of a fog.

That’s a full day thrown away.”

“I’ll catch a galloping goliath!  Word of honor! Just you wait.”

“Crazy old coot”, says Anna. “All right, go! Shoo!”

So Al is on his own. Off and away in his half ton truck.

Stops in a foggy mist at a babbling brook.

And now it’s all about sitting for hours and hours in his old half worn out boat,

rod in hand, watching and waiting, nodding off.

Was Anna right? Damn.

But wait – what’s this?

Whoa ho!  What a hit!

A crazy fight, a long-haul skirmish, and at long last,

Following much ado and many a splash,

Blissful, joyous victory!

Man oh man!

Just look at this colossal monstrous trout!

Al is truly jubilant and can hardly wait

to put his catch into a sizzling hot frying pan

and scoff and laugh at Anna’s words.

“HAHA! I told you so!” says Al.  “And you said I couldn’t do it.”

“Stubborn old fool”, snorts Anna,

 hiding a happy grin.

The Last Supper

What I seriously needed on my last night in Ontario was a trip to Lord Elgin’s restaurant for all you can eat fish and chips.  I hope you can imagine how high my eyes are rolling.  Not that their fish isn’t absolutely delicious, but I’ve eaten enough food in the past two weeks to feed a small country.  But they really do have the best halibut EVER and they encourage you to eat lots of it.  So it’s only polite to oblige.

It’s been incredibly hot all day but the wind has been blowing a gale.  There have also been power outages on and off all afternoon.  After dinner we went on a tour of the countryside.  It’s quite amazing how many wind turbines there are now in North Bruce.  It’s definitely not the landscape of my childhood.  Hard not to get mixed up in all the controversy surrounding their construction and operation.  I wonder if people made such a fuss when power lines were being put up everywhere.

It’s still a beautiful area and it’s interesting to see how things have changed.  Of course there are some things that seem to never change too.  We drove by the farm where we grew up, the little red school house that’s been converted into a home, and along country roads that used to be gravel and are now paved with brand new houses in the strangest (to me, anyway) places.

My sister and I were able to go through boxes and scrapbooks and photo albums yesterday and today, and I have gleaned a whole bunch of treasures from things that were moms.  I’m sorry my sisters house has been the storage place for everything and it does seem a bit incredible that the process of sorting it all has taken such a long time.  Some things have been too hard to throw away until now.

One last lunch with my brother tomorrow in London and then I’m heading home.  If there’s snow in Edmonton I’d rather not know about it until the last possible minute.  I’ve decided against wearing flip flops though, just in case.
