Still Sparkling

Before checking my e-mail this morning I made a solemn promise to myself to answer the Daily WordPress Prompt no matter what.  Every day I read it and have good intentions, but we all know the place to which good intentions are paving the road.  This road is also crowded with people who write awkward sentences and take a long time to get to the point.

Sparkling or Still

What’s your idea of a perfect day off: one during which you can quietly relax, doing nothing, or one with one fun activity lined up after the other? Tell us how you’d spend your time.

At the risk of boring you into a coma, here goes.  Hey, it’s not like I’ve duct taped you to a chair in my living room where you feel obligated to choke down a bad cup of coffee and pretend to listen.  Although that’s how you may feel.

I have been successfully retired for fifty days.  That’s almost two months of continuous days off, and that makes me a self-proclaimed expert on the subject.  Quietly relaxing doing nothing is a fun activity for me, so I choose both answers simultaneously.

My typical day starts with coffee consumed while I scroll through all the e-mails I get from the best of the blogs I follow.  This can take a long time, depending on how interesting you all have decided to be on any particular day.  November has been a crazy month with everyone posting like mad.  I’m anticipating less activity in December when we’re all in Christmas mode.  Even if you don’t celebrate it, it’s pretty hard to ignore altogether.

W finishes reading the paper and most mornings wanders off to the kitchen, eventually interrupting me after making breakfast to tell me to come and cook my own eggs.  He just can’t make himself mutilate eggs the way I do.  Broken, flipped and cooked to death should be a choice in all breakfast restaurants.

If either of us has somewhere to go, we get our act together and do that.  If we don’t, the best way to spend an afternoon for me is messing around in my art room.  Messing around is no vague term.  Sometimes I share my mess, sometimes I don’t.  There was this one oil pastel thing I did that was so hideous I threw it out.  Picture an alien with green eyes and hair on fire.

I also read real books or something on my kindle, clean up, play some word games, write some kind of nonsense on my blog, drum up some ambition to make something for dinner, make lists.  Yes, there are days when I don’t leave my house.  I refuse to feel bad about this, although I will admit some form of physical exercise will have to make it on to one of my lists soon.  Up and down the stairs fifteen times a day should count for something in the meantime.

WAKE UP!  I’m still talking to you.  Don’t you want to hear how I spend my evenings??  They’re more or less a repeat of the afternoons, actually.

Some days I wonder if they miss me at work.  Then I read Dilbert on my page a day calendar and think – nope – probably not.

Today is our anniversary so we will probably go out to eat somewhere.  We also know there’s a bunch of leftovers in the fridge and neither of us would care if we opted for that instead.  It’s quite delightful to have days stretch ahead of me which I can fill with whatever I want.

Okay, duct tape is going in the garbage and you’re free to go.  I’ll finish up the coffee.  Draw a couple of flaming red-haired elves.  Try not to get too stressed out by all the excitement in my mad and crazy life.

I worked hard for this!  I’m going to enjoy every single fun and relaxing minute of it.

Anyone else ever wake up in the morning with a burning desire to draw an elf?  If anyone at all says yes to that, I can only assume we are twins who were separated at birth.  However, as you can see, this is not an elf, although I had to stop myself from making that little ear all pointy.

The elf is still a possibility.  But today I’m also thinking PAINT.

Who knows where the day will end.  (Only my secret twin.  Scary thought.)

Okay, I do have a couple of sane things to say.  W is off to hand rehab.  But his fingers are straight and moveable and so much improved, I can’t imagine they’ll keep him there for long. Tomorrow is our anniversary, in case I forget to mention it then.  Forty three years together.  Unless you take away all the separate vacations.  Hey, time apart is very important.  You do whatever works.

Eleven straight days of mindless posts to go!  Haha. I am on such a roll.

It’s more challenging to attempt some kind of expression than to draw a simply placid, pleasant, symmetrical face.

This could be the concentration it takes to whistle, or to pucker up on New Years Eve, but the fact that her eyebrow is raised and the other side of her face is frowning suggests skepticism to me.  (Really?  You seriously think I’m buying this?  Nooooo……)

Our tv guy is here. The sun is shining.  I’m off to see my ENT doctor this afternoon to give him this look if he still doesn’t know what’s up with my immune system.  Just another manic Monday.

By the way, I do have the peculiar talent of being able to raise my left eyebrow independently of the right.  The right eyebrow though won’t do anything on its own.

Have a write- happy day.

Some Sunday fun! My idea of it anyway. I did not mean for this to look like some kind of demented cat family portrait, but most things I do turn out not quite as expected.

W (aka Good Grandpa) is off somewhere helping granddaughter K find winter boots. She’s 13.  We may never see them again.  Never mind, he’s just come home and declared the shopping expedition a success.

Last night the digital box for our tv died, a day after our DVD player stopped working.  My printer has decided new ink cartridges are empty and refuses to print. Our electronic world is falling to pieces and I’m drawing cats.

A tech guy from Telus will be here tomorrow morning to sort out our tv woes.  Meanwhile W will have to make do with Netflix on his computer.  No hockey.  Boo hoo.   And I will have to use his printer.  It’s rather silly to have two printers anyway.

And now I’m going to make meatballs.  I don’t anticipate anything going wrong, but you never know.

Hope your weekend was fun and trouble free.

Whew! I was having some sketch withdrawal issues there for a minute.  So this was a lovely calming exercise for a Saturday morning.

My perspective work of art so far consists of many straight lines vanishing into the vanishing point. It looks a little like a shrinking black hole.  I got tired of staring at the page wondering what to do next.  The above satisfactorily bumped me out of a perspective induced hypnotic trance of sorts.  I don’t really know what that is, but I’m pretty sure I was in one.

My astute observation for the day:  eyelashes are easy to over do.  A lot like applying mascara.  Too much and you reach clown status.  Go ahead, critique the eyelashes!  I can take it!  (No I can’t).

Back to the drawing board to build my city street on its way to oblivion.

But first…..more coffee.  It’s shaping up to be an awesome weekend.

Allergic to November

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

It’s one of those dull and dreary overcast snowy days and I’m sitting inside my house sneezing my face off.  Would you not think all the airborne allergens would be frozen solid by November?  We have a constantly running air purifier on our furnace and I have another small one right beside me supposedly sucking the impurities out of my breathing space. Maybe I’m allergic to my choice of tissues.  Wouldn’t that be funny?  Whatever.  I’ve given up trying to figure it out and will eventually get tired of my sniffling and watering eyes and take a 24 hour relief allergy pill.  The strange thing is, tomorrow I may be perfectly fine with no symptoms at all. It’s a perfect day to stay inside where it’s warm so that’s my current plan. I am working on a drawing which is all about perspective and vanishing points and proportions and who knows how many other “p” words.  If pain in the ass comes up, you will never see it. This morning W got the stitches removed from his right hand where he had a procedure done to straighten out his ring and pinky fingers.  He has to wear a splint to keep them straight and will be going to some kind of hand rehab place starting next week.  My sister recently had carpal tunnel surgery on her right hand and is still in recovery mode.  Last night I started knitting a cotton dish cloth (you are officially old when you think this is an interesting way to spend your time) and my right hand went all tingly and numb so I stopped.  Taking frequent breaks helps.  This doesn’t happen when I draw.  Yet.   I cannot imagine what my mood would be like if my right hand suddenly ceased to function normally. Well, the problem is, I CAN imagine it and it’s not pretty.  So let’s all be grateful for the use of whichever hand we use the most to get through our day!  If you don’t type with a pencil between your teeth or paint with your feet, you are one of the lucky ones. Okay, I’m taking a pill now.  Because my nose is going all tingly and numb.  Along with my brain.  Hey, it’s a day and it’s a post   My work here is done. nano

Six Word Fortune Cookies

image

Why six words?  I have no idea.

No chinese food was consumed to compile this list of six word fortunes, but I’m here to tell you there are some really lame free fortune cookie apps floating around out there.

So close your eyes and pick a number between one and twenty.  Good Luck.  The only thing I’m taking credit for here is the word count.

1.  Keep searching:  you will find it.

2.  Change your attitude to change reality.

3.  See what you want to see.

4.  Never bring sorrow into your home.

5.  You are stronger than your challenges.

6.  Always let your intuition guide you.

7.  Your generosity will be repaid soon.

8.  Do not swim with sharks today.

9.  You have many talents awaiting expression.

10.  Today will be better than yesterday.

11.  Don’t just give advice, take it.

12.  Nothing is free:  bill to follow.

13.  Being happy doesn’t mean being perfect.

14.  Look your fear in the eye.

15.  Happy news is on the way.

16.  Great thoughts come from your heart.

17.  Do nothing in life without passion.

18.  Every exit is a new entrance.

19.  Try listening to yourself more often.

20.  You choose what happens to you.

I sincerely hope this was a helpful and rewarding five minutes of your life that you will never get back.  I am especially fond of number eight and taking it to heart.  May good fortune smile upon you, even when it can’t be summed up in six words.

Six Things and Then Some

The highway going north, except this trip it wasn't that green.
The highway going north, except this trip it wasn’t that green.

Three things about the road trip last Sunday:

1.  Dry, bare roads in the sunshine encourage me to drive faster than the speed limit.  I used to have a little four-cylinder car that wanted to die going up the hills.  Now I have a car that wants to pass everything.  Twinned highways are the best.

2.  There are spots along this route where there is no phone service and no radio reception.

3.  I have favourite bathroom stops along the way.  Because I’m not fond of surprises.

The highway heading home, except not that bad because there was no drifting snow.
The highway heading home, except not that bad because there was no drifting snow. This time.

Three things about the road trip yesterday:

1.  There were scary sections where slushy ruts had frozen solid.  Black ice was a definite possibility.

2.  There are a lot of big truck operators who do not observe Remembrance Day as a holiday.

3.  I seem to be honing my skills for missing turns on arrival anywhere, including home.  I drove by the turn off I should have taken, took the next one, and drove into a maze of new residential developments which I then had to find my way out of.  Once I knew where I was, I took yet another TWO wrong turns.  Talk about your scenic route.

Six things that will make me read a blog. (A Nano Poblano Random Prompt)

1.  Lists and random photos.  (So, is this working for you??)

2.  Likes.  I like how Word Press suggests taking a look at the likers posts.  I like to do that.

3.  Common interests.  Or completely uncommon interests.  This is a wondrous place.  I especially like to read blog posts by people who have answered the same prompt.  Or by people who have tackled the same subject.  Or by people who have written about subjects of which I have no knowledge whatsoever.

4.  Recommendations by people whose blogs I already follow.  If I like you, chances are very good that I will also like whoever you like.

5.  Comments.  If someone new takes the time to comment on something I write, I will make a supreme effort to check out their blog.  My supreme efforts sometimes fall short, but I am trying to bump up the supreme part of that and get better at doing it.

6.  Reading the comments on other blogs often prompts me to click on the commenter to see what else they have to say.  I am really nosey.  I have found a lot of incredible blogs that way.

What makes you read a blog and decide to follow it?  Are you still reading this, or did your mind wander before making it through to the end of the first list?  Do you think I should start using the direction finder thing on my phone???

Have a great Wednesday!  I’m off to sign some important business papers.  Supposing I don’t get lost.

Art du Jour 10

imageimageThis is just some more practice and experimentation or busy-work or whatever you would like to call it.  Sketches and sketches and more sketches.  Maybe I will try some perspective landscapes when I’m tired of noses and eyelashes.

Last day with my grandchildren, heading home tomorrow.  The sun is shining but the weather has turned crisp and cold, so driving should be fine.  If all goes well, this is movie theatre day this afternoon.

We have been playing a sketching game, where each player draws a picture chosen from a list of possibilities on a playing card, and whoever draws that picture guesses what it is.  The artists get points for having the players guess correctly, so it makes sense to try to produce a drawing which is easily recognizable.  A little black dot on a blank page, or a simple square is really difficult to figure out without some context clues.  You are also rewarded for speed, so it’s an interesting mix.

It’s a Monday off school and work, so bonus weekend day for everyone.

Celebrate

A Nano Poblano Prompt:  Make up a new holiday

Holidays should be declared here every time we get heavily snowed upon.  Here’s the blurb from Environment Canada this morning:

Snowfall Warning:  Heavy snowfall today and tonight.

10 cm of snow has already fallen in Grande Prairie and another 15-25 cm is expected by Sunday morning.

Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow.

Exactly who is that last paragraph addressing?  People on holiday, visiting from Mars?

I had already decided to stay longer since the kids have Monday and Tuesday off school, and it’s a great feeling not to have to rush home for anything.  Anyway, snow days as holidays!  That’s my suggestion.  So, basically, nothing but intermittent scattered holidays from November to March.

Hope everyone is having a super fun weekend, snowed in or not.
